Lent Series: A Wisdom Journey with the Gospel of Thomas

On the Wednesdays of Lent we will have a simple service of Contemplative Evening Prayer at 6:00pm. Each week we will explore a different prayer practices, from the Stations of the Cross, to chant, to silent Centering Prayer. The service will finish by 6:30pm, and we will gather for a simple soup supper.

During supper, we will study the Gospel of Thomas, taking a look at the Wisdom tradition of Christianity, and its encounter with Hinduism, Buddhism, and other traditions from Asia. How does Christian practice and teaching resonated with so-called “Eastern Spirituality?” What ways of faithful encounter exist?

St. Thomas, according to tradition, brought the Gospel to India and is seen as the founder of the Mar Thoma, the Church of India. The re-discovery of a Gospel attributed to Thomas in the 1940s has brought a resurgence of interest into his life, teaching, and the particularly contemplative vision of Christianity that this strand of Christianity teaches.
