The Lessons

A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 1:15-17, 21-26)

During this time, the family of believers was a company of about one hundred twenty persons. Peter stood among them and said, “Brothers and sisters, the scripture that the Holy Spirit announced beforehand through David had to be fulfilled. This was the scripture concerning Judas, who became a guide for those who arrested Jesus. This happened even though he was one of us and received a share of this ministry.”

“Therefore, we must select one of those who have accompanied us during the whole time the Lord Jesus lived among us, beginning from the baptism of John until the day when Jesus was taken from us. This person must become along with us a witness to his resurrection.” So they nominated two: Joseph called Barsabbas, who was also known as Justus, and Matthias.

They prayed, “Lord, you know everyone’s deepest thoughts and desires. Show us clearly which one you have chosen from among these two to take the place of this ministry and apostleship, from which Judas turned away to go to his own place.” When they cast lots, the lot fell on Matthias. He was added to the eleven apostles.

The Word of the Lord
Thanks be to God

The Psalm (Psalm 1)

The Psalm is read responsively. The congregation is invited to read the verses in bold.

Happy are they who have not walked in the counsel of the wicked, *
nor lingered in the way of sinners,
nor sat in the seats of the scornful!

Their delight is in the law of the Holy One, *
and they meditate on that law day and night.

They are like trees planted by streams of water,
bearing fruit in due season, with leaves that do not wither; *
everything they do shall prosper.

It is not so with the wicked; *
they are like chaff which the wind blows away.

Therefore the wicked shall not stand upright when judgment comes,*
nor the sinner in the council of the righteous;

For the Holy One knows the way of the righteous, *
but the way of the wicked is doomed.

The Holy Gospel of our Savior Jesus Christ according to John (John 17:6-19)

“I have revealed your name to the people you gave me from this world. They were yours and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything you have given me comes from you. This is because I gave them the words that you gave me, and they received them. They truly understood that I came from you, and they believed that you sent me.
“I’m praying for them. I’m not praying for the world but for those you gave me, because they are yours. Everything that is mine is yours and everything that is yours is mine; I have been glorified in them. I’m no longer in the world, but they are in the world, even as I’m coming to you. Holy Father, watch over them in your name, the name you gave me, that they will be one just as we are one. When I was with them, I watched over them in your name, the name you gave to me, and I kept them safe. None of them were lost, except the one who was destined for destruction, so that scripture would be fulfilled. Now I’m coming to you and I say these things while I’m in the world so that they can share completely in my joy. I gave your word to them and the world hated them, because they don’t belong to this world, just as I don’t belong to this world. I’m not asking that you take them out of this world but that you keep them safe from the evil one. They don’t belong to this world, just as I don’t belong to this world. Make them holy in the truth; your word is truth. As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. I made myself holy on their behalf so that they also would be made holy in the truth.

The Gospel of the Lord
Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Prayers

Let us pray in the way Christ taught us, and in the language of our hearts.

Our Father, who art in heaven,
  hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
   thy will be done,
   on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
    as we forgive those
    who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation
     but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom,
     and the power, and the glory,
    for ever and ever. Amen.

You may add your prayer requests in the comments at any time. Know that people will pray for you.

Our Lord lives, for death has no dominion over him. And so we, God’s holy church, proclaim the resurrection, saying: Christ is risen! Amen, Alleluia!

Created in the image and likeness of God, we pray to see God’s image in one another, we pray especially for Lillian Nancy Tchoukaleff who was born on Tuesday April 20, for those who are celebrating birthdays this week, especially Mary Bass, Ken Olliff, Julia Holland, Leanna Baudendistel, and Dan Ellis. And for those celebrating anniversaries. May our lives proclaim: Christ is risen! Amen, Alleluia!

Tested in our faith and strengthened by God’s love, we pray for open hearts, that we may live to proclaim: Christ is risen! Amen, Alleluia!

Joining with those who share in the passion of Christ through illness, famine, war, temptation, and trial, we pray for their courage and strength that those who suffer may proclaim: Christ is risen! Amen, Alleluia!

United in our hope that we and all who die will live again, we pray for family and friends who have died, proclaiming: Christ is risen! Amen, Alleluia!

Loving and true God. you have glorified Christ Jesus as the pledge of our freedom from sin and death, receive our praise and prayer through Christ our Lord, the great Amen and our Alleluia, now and forever. Amen.

Concluding Prayers

God of justice, we pray in the midst of injustice. We pray as a pandemic continues to claim lives through disease. We pray as racism continues to claim lives through structural violence. We pray as the epidemic of gun violence continues to plague our streets and communities. In these days of imagining our future, help us to make concrete steps toward Beloved Community. Help us to heal division. Help us to be courageous as we work for change and dismantle unjust systems which are costing lives, and robbing us of promised futures. Help us to remember we belong to one another. Amen.

Almighty God, Father of all mercies,
we your unworthy servants give you humble thanks
for all your goodness and loving-kindness
to us and to all whom you have made.
We bless you for our creation, preservation,
and all the blessings of this life;
but above all for your immeasurable love
in the redemption of the world by our Lord Jesus Christ;
for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory.
And, we pray, give us such an awareness of your mercies,
that with truly thankful hearts we may show forth your praise,
not only with our lips, but in our lives,
by giving up our selves to your service,
and by walking before you
in holiness and righteousness all our days;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit,
be honor and glory throughout all ages. Amen.

The Peace

The peace of Christ be always with you.

And also with you.

The Peace is then exchangedConsider sending a text, a message on Facebook, or even writing a letter or email to someone who could use some peace. If you are in the space, please do not approach people outside your household. A wave, a peace sign, or a “smize” (a smile with your eyes) will do.
